SATI Turntable


To follow this goal means building a uncompromised record player with the best materials you can find and with clever combination of old and new knowledge.  What I came up with was a incredible record player with a performance that have never been achieved before. Its performance is like direct hearing a ultimate studio tape recorder. This experience is a fantastic experience.

The combination of a 50 kg platter and the best record player motor in the world is key parts o Said another way the record platter is running round and round with better specification Than any known to us wow and flutter tester. The result is accurate pits which is easy to hear . For a start Test you can take a good piano recordings, especially a piano need accurate pits for maximum enjoyment. Some companies try to achieve absolute pits with adding three motors to run the platter but forget that three motors never runs in absolute the same velocity, the problem is further Worsened when the turntable is suspended floating in all directions. Other companies is adding fly wheels in order to repair the speed accuracy. This is only helping a weak turntable motor but not so on the SATI, you will hear no improvement!

Another important quality for a record players performance is the platters ability to allways keep neutral support to the sound neither too damped (some record players platter is made with Rubber, glue, lead etc. and is sounding thick and slow!). At the other end we find record players With plastic acrylic platters, these players have lack of bas performance and will all ways have a resonant, the acryl platter is adding a noisy layer on all music.

The SATI main part is the 50 kg platter with it`s Bolted polymer at the top is turning on a 12 mm tungsten ball which can bare a 500 kg platter With ease. The tungsten ball is the heart of the bearing where the 16 mm axel is standing and this System is the reason for ultimate flow of resonances out of the platter and the reason why the SATI plays better than high end turntables with magnetic bearing and air bearing where the resonances stays inside the platter, this means they have no grounding like the sati, air bearings and magnetic bearings is working as a high pass filter and therefore will as a rule have less bas and the sounding will be brighter and thin! When the Sati is playing, people are surprised over how much body, control and bas there are in Recordings.

Helle Marie  It is not only the 50 kg platter there is responsible for the fantastic sound performance it is also the motor. The motor runs with perfect speed accuracy, it has no drift like we are used to in many motors. It is very irritating to have to control the speed all the time after a few hours playing. The SATI motor ad its control unit is state of art, the motor is very strong and power full, no other record players there is so power full and runs with so high accuracy. The motor is a brushless dc motor with 12 poles with a control unit which control the motor 2048 Times every time the motor runs one rpm. This was not so good if it was controlled digital, because A digital controller has a zig zag way which is shown on a scope as fine distortion, instead is the Motor controlled in a soft three phase waves like the soft waves there was shown in former Tube controlled motors, which was good but was not perfect a small drifting was evident and it had a hard time controlling a DC motor. The new motor is so strong that you can use a cleaning brush While you are hearing your music with hearing speed change. The power full motor is so strong that the belts inherent drift has much lower near zero influence Between the motor and the platter. The motor is running so strong and with such accuracy that it can hold the 50 kg platter like it was a iron fist together with the heavy platters own innerti. This is keeping the belts elasticity (springiness) has absolutely minimum interference. The platter and the tone arm is integrated with the 40 mm thick alu plinth and the arm board is a massive 150 mm tower. This strong integration is responsible for that the arm and platter is resonating in timing. This is a problem in turntables where the tone arm plinth is placed outside the platters plinth. The plinths feet has its own design with low resonating anti vibration gel between the plinth and main table support which at best should be a air table with very low resonance bought separately.

If you look at all other turntable brochures today, nobody really wants to talk about their motors, because they are not at all up to the desired standards! In the sixties we had much better motors, At that time you could buy exelent flywheel motors which had a controlled feedback system with an optical encoder! Wich means, on the side of the flywheel there were marks, which were detected optically and sent and this devise was controlling that the motor was running exact with the same speed.

The Sati motor is not a flywheel motor but a flat high enerti 12 pole motor with three hall elements which are controlled by an optical encoder 2048 times every time the motor runs one rpm, no other motor on todays turntables has a 12 pole BRUSHLESS DC MOTOR.

The old SATI motor was a two pole brushless motor from Origin Live and they also made the analog speed control, but this motor had difficulty in running with the same speed, it was drifting, many owners of Thorens, Lin and others have upgraded there turntables with this Origin Live motor. In America they also uses this small two poles motor on Teres turntables and others.

Clear Audios referense turntable uses a 4 pole motor but unfortunately with low enerti and much less horsepower, in comparison to the SATI motor is like a 12 cylinder motor over a 4 cyliner. Low power together with light plastic platter gives a constant velocity (speed). High super constant running motor with great enerti with high mass platter gives many times better constant speed.
Well, the 12 pole SATI motor is controlled in a unik way because its not controlled in standard digitally way. It’s controlled by three soft sinus wave signals.

In the very beginning I had developed a tube controlled powersupply which was controlled a very good Papst pancake motor, This had the wanted soft wave control, but only one wave.

If you use digitally zero to one (with 0-1) control, will it control the motor very hard! On the scope you can see it as small zigzag peaks, the motor do not like these peaks and will act acordingly (it will not flow fluently). This is very easy to hear in comparison. 90% of high end turntables are controlled this way.

With the new SATI motor with high power output, the single soft wave is expanded to three soft waves, and these are controlled by three hall elements, which al the time are controlling the 12 poles to run in exact and constant speed. The more times the motor is controlled, the more exact it is running, and now we are free of all this drifting every time we turn on the turntable and we are also free of the digital distortion where the motor runs zigzag.

The old motor weight was 36 gram the new is 0.7 kg. Furthermore, the new motor employs soft start, it takes about 6 seconds before it’s running full speed.
